Career Exploration

Congratulations on exploring a career in business! There are several paths you may be considering, and each offers different skills, career outcomes, and opportunities. Below is a brief overview of common business majors. For additional guidance, visit the How to Research a Career page. You can also explore these roles through our Career Advice playlists on the Magner Career Center YouTube channel.

  • Accounting: Accounting majors learn how to create, maintain, and audit accurate financial records for businesses and organizations. Students study accounting theory and develop skills in financial analysis, reporting, and compliance.
  • Business Administration: Business Administration prepares students for a broad range of careers, including entrepreneurship. Coursework covers management, e-commerce, statistics, operations management, and strategic decision-making.
  • Business Management: Business Management focuses on leadership within corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors. Courses include accounting, economics, operations management, statistics, computer applications, business analytics, business law, and management. 
  • Economics: Economics majors study how resources are allocated and how incentives and policies affect individuals, organizations, and governments. The major emphasizes research methods, quantitative analysis, and policymaking.
  • Finance: Finance students learn how to create financial plans, provide investment advice, and support business decision-making through budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Human Resources (HR): HR professionals focus on recruiting, training, retaining, and supporting employees. HR plays a key role in creating inclusive, safe, and effective workplace environments.
  • Marketing: Marketing majors study branding, promotion, and consumer engagement. Students learn how organizations build relationships with target audiences through communication, research, and strategic campaigns.

Most deadlines for fall internships and full-time roles occur in late September. Opportunities can be found on BC Handshake and company websites. Students are encouraged to bookmark the Big 4/Business Employer Deadlines document to stay organized.

The Koppelman School of Business (KSB) Career Team

The Magner Career Center is excited to introduce the KSB Career Team, dedicated to providing enhanced career support for business students. This new structure ensures you receive the guidance you need while our team takes on expanded responsibilities. 

Cliff Frontera, the Career Liaison for the Koppelman School of Business is the team lead for the KSB Career Team, continuing to organize employer events and provide strategic guidance, but appointments will be made with members of the KSB team. 

Your KSB Career Team includes: 

  • Julie Bashioum
  • Kellie Lindow
  • Ricky Costas-Hernandez

These team members will be your primary contacts for career appointments and guidance. 

What’s Changing 

  • Appointments: All student appointments will now be scheduled with Julie, Kellie, or Ricky through Navigate. Navigate will schedule you with one of them automatically based on your availability. 
  • Walk-In Hours: Walk-in hours with Cliff will be paused for the spring 2026 semester. 

Meeting with Cliff 

Appointments with Cliff are referral-based only. Here’s how it works: 

  1. You will first meet with a member of the KSB Career Team (Julie, Kellie or Ricky).
  1. After one or more meetings, the team will assess if a meeting with Cliff is necessary and consult with him before making the decision. The Career Team will then contact you via email advising to schedule an appointment with Cliff. They will share pre-work needed to schedule the appointment (see below).
  1. Not all students will be referred to Cliff. 

Pre-Work Required for Appointments with Cliff: 

If you are referred to meet with Cliff, you must complete the following before scheduling: 

  • State who from the KSB Team you met with previously (and when).
  • Clearly state your career goals.
  • Provide a reviewed resume.
  • Set up a Handshake profile.

Brooklyn College CUNY2X

CUNY 2X Tech is an initiative to double the number of CUNY students graduating annually with a tech-related bachelor’s degree prepared to launch careers in the NYC tech ecosystem. Designed in partnership with NYC Tech Talent Pipeline industry and academic leaders, this five-year, multi-million dollar initiative brings together CUNY senior colleges and NYC tech employers to better align tech education with industry needs and expand access to quality tech careers. CUNY Tech Prep is an industry-informed program for exceptional computer science students in the CUNY senior college system. Here are some suggestions to help you with your self-directed job search:

CPT & OPT Breakdown

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) allow F-1 international students to gain U.S. work experience related to their major.  

  • CPT is typically part of the academic program, requires approval from a school official, and must be completed before graduation; it is limited to a specific employer and timeframe, though students can have multiple CPTs.  
  • OPT provides flexible work experience that can be completed before or after graduation, is not employer-specific, and does not require course credit. Students are eligible for 12 months of OPT, which is authorized by USCIS and grants an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).  

Opt4Humanity OPT Visa Sponsorship

Opt4Humanity connects graduating international students with local charities or social impact organizations willing to freely sponsor students’ Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs in roles related to their majors.

FAQs for International Students

Should I list my visa status on my résumé?

Your visa status is typically not included on your resume. In many cases, your educational background and work history will show that you are an international student. Recruitment questions that may be asked include:

  • “Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?”
    • Yes, you are, providing you apply for and receive CPT or OPT prior to starting any job or internship.
  • “Will you now or in the future require sponsorship for an employment visa status (ex. H-1B status)?”
    • Yes.

How do I answer when I am asked by an employer about my work authorization as an F-1 student?

> Explain that you have the legal right to work in the US for a specific time frame.
> Explain gaining OPT work authorization is a simple & free process.
> Share that work authorization can be renewed for 3-6 years with an H-1B work visa.

If a company says they do not hire international students, should I even apply?

It depends. If the employer is a federal agency or has a contract with a federal agency, they are not legally allowed to hire foreign nationals. But for many organizations that say they do not hire international students, it may mean that they haven’t hired international students yet. You can educate the employers about the hiring process and why they should hire international students by using the information on the Hiring International Students Employer page.

What can I do to make myself a competitive candidate in the application process?

  • In short, take advantage of all of the Magner Center services! These include:
    • Having your resume and cover letters reviewed by a career coach.
    • Participating in mock interviews.
    • If needed, improving your English skills by speaking in class, giving presentations, joining clubs like Smooth Talkers public speaking club, taking courses in the speech department, and expanding your circle of native English speaking friends.
    • Creating and actively using LinkedIn.
    • Networking! (You’re seeing it mentioned frequently for a reason: it’s important!)

Receiving an Offer

  • Don’t renege on an offer once you have accepted another offer. You’ve made a commitment in which employers expect you to follow your word. Usage of the Center assumes you will abide by our terms & conditions where reneging is explicitly not allowed
