What are the top tips and resources to consider for my dream career?

As part of the Institutional Advancement division, the Magner Career Center collaborates with alumni and donors to give Brooklyn College students the best chance at landing their dream career.

  • Explore Your Interests
College is the time to explore your interests and make informed decisions about your career. Students can meet with a career coach to explore career possibilities, and discuss results of Career Assessments.
  • Start Planning Early
Landing a job or an internship can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. 48% of students intern before their junior year. Access HireBC for job/internship listings, attend our job/internship fair, panels, and research companies/industries through using the links below.
  • Network
Connect with successful alumni from top organizations across all sectors by attending our career panels, company visits, and networking events, listed on our events page. Don’t forget to participate in our Alumni Mentor program and join our LinkedIn group.
  • Stand Out From the Crowd
Recruiters look at resumes for 6.5 seconds. Get yours noticed! Use the resume and cover letter guide (using the link below) and then join us for our Walk In Hours:
  • Make a Great First Impression
Practice makes perfect when marketing yourself to professionals. Prepare with our interview guide (linked below), workshops, and mock interviews
  • Develop Relevant Experience
Students who complete three or more internships are twice as likely to receive a full-time offer than those who only do one. Keep up with your competition! Complete at least two internships before you graduate, participate in campus research, or volunteer. Access companies such as Lincoln Center, Colgate Palmolive, KPMG, Discovery Communications, HarperCollins, NYC School Foods, United Nations, and more via HireBC, our job/internship fairs, and employer events. Learn more at the career section of the BC Portal (linked below)
  • Fund Your Dream Internship
About half of all internships are unpaid, but the Magner Career Center gives many stipends that total up to $125,000 to help students afford an internship. Apply for spring internships by October; summer fall/internships by March. Use the links below for stipend information:
  • Develop the Skills Employers Want
The top five attributes employers look for are leadership, the ability to work in a team, written and oral communications skills, and problem-solving abilities. Take advantage through the academic and interpersonal resources offered by Brooklyn College, outside of the Magner Career Center.

Remember to Stay Connected with the Magner Career Center for all the latest career news. The Magner Career Center hosts many events including workshops, employer visits, and information sessions.
