During a company visit you’ll: 

• Learn about career paths for your major of interest.
• Gain insights into the organizational structure.
• Hear about internship/job programs, timelines, and how to stand out in the application process.
• Receive networking tips and career advice from industry professionals.

Conduct & Professionalism 

Remember that you are representing Brooklyn College and that you should act in a positive manner, so we can maintain these company relationships. Here are some conduct guidelines to review:  

• Please review our Building Professional Relationships presentation which details best practices when networking and meeting potential mentors. 
• Although a company visit is not an interview, this interaction can open doors, so make a good impression. This is NOT a recruitment event. 
• By attending, you will be representing Brooklyn College, therefore we need 100% attendance. 
  • Can’t attend? Let the organizer know ASAP. 
  • Not showing up to the event will disqualify you from being considered for any future company visits. 

Before the Visit: 

• Be prepared to introduce yourself (name, major, graduation, experience, career interest, etc.) through your elevator pitch.
• Be prepared to answer some basic questions such as why you are interested in attending the visit or about your career interests. 
• Research the company and your host (if shared): prepare 5 thoughtful questions about the company as a whole, working there and/or specifically for the host(s). Here are some samples!
  • Try to use the company name in questions instead of “you guys” (e.g.: what do you guys look for in intern candidates?”)  

Day of the Visit: 

• Be sure to wear business casual attire (avoid jeans, sneakers, tank tops or revealing clothing). 

• Arrive on time: plan your commute and arrive 15 minutes early and wait nearby. As you know, the trains/buses are always delayed, so always plan ahead! 

• Network with professionals and ask for a way you can connect with them in the future (email or LinkedIn).

After the Visit:  

• Follow up via email or on LinkedIn with those you met and leave a message thanking them for their time.

I plan on completing an unpaid internship. Can Brooklyn College provide compensation?  

• Brooklyn College offers a stipend award program which pays students to complete unpaid work experiences

• Navigate will automatically assign you to a Career Coach based on your major

I am applying for grad school and would like my personal statement reviewed can the Magner Career Center help?

• Unfortunately, the Magner Career Center does not review personal statements
• If you need assistance, you can reach out to the Learning Center

I need assistance in creating my schedule and determining classes to take/I am looking to switch my major, is there someone who can assist me? Who can help me?

The best office for undergraduate advisement would be the Center for Academic Advisement and Student Success (CAASS):   

• Schedule an appointment via Navigate and select CAASS
• Drop in: Room 3207 Boylan Hall. The office is open Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm  
• Call: 718.951.5471   
• Email: CAASS@brooklyn.cuny.edu  (They will respond within three business days)  
• You should also consult with your department advisor for major specific questions

Graduate students: are advised by their program director, not CAASS

I may have been scammed. What do I do?

Scam emails are increasing substantially.

• Review our red flags page to spot employer scams. The college also documents known scam emails on their spam page
• If you have been scammed or think you have, reach out to the Career Center at careernews@brooklyn.cuny.edu. We will share the scam with public safety to guide you in filing a report
• If the scam has caused financial hardships you may want to apply for an emergency grant. If you believe your student email has been compromised contact BC-InfoSec@brooklyn.cuny.edu
