Why won’t Schedule Builder let me add this Psychology class?

Check the error message you receive when trying to add the class.

These are the most common reasons that prevent enrollment in courses (click for more information):

Closed or Full Class

Issue: you are unable to enroll into a class because it is already full.

The department of psychology does not offer over-tallies. Students have the option to use the waitlist function:

  • If a seat opens up, the next student on the waitlist will be auto-enrolled as long as there is no conflict in schedule or and the added class will not exceed the maximum allowable credit limit for the term.
  • Students can add to the waitlist as a swap in order to save a seat in an alternative class while they wait.
  • If the class appears open, but a closed class error occurs— Check whether there are students on the waitlist. The class may temporarily show as open while a student is being auto-enrolled from the waitlist.
  • Waitlists are purged mid-day on the last day to add a class.
  • Students are encouraged to register for open classes by 11:59pm on the last day to add/swap.
  • Please do not contact the instructor to request overtally permission for a closed class.

Check the “Class remarks” in Schedule Builder for more information about why department consent is indicated.

Reserved Sections:

Department consent cannot be requested for sections that are being reserved for a specific population of student, such as:

  • First Year Freshmen
  • SEEK
  • High School (i.e. Early College, College Now, Brooklyn College Academy, and STAR)

Classes with an application/approval process:

The following courses have an application and/or approval process in order to request department consent:

Requisites Not Met

Please check the prerequisite for the course carefully. If you do not have the prerequisite, select a different class.

If you have the pre-requisite and continue to have issues, please see the Requisites Not Met For Undergraduate Psychology Courses page.

Hold on Record

Students can see their holds/service indicators in their CUNYfirst Student Center; look for “Holds” and click on details. The details will provide information on which department to contact to resolve the hold.   Negative holds/service indicators prevent enrollment.

  • The Psychology Dept does not place holds and cannot lift holds.
  • IMPORTANT: Incoming students may see a “Must meet entry major criteria” service indicator. The Psychology Major does not have entry criteria, and this service indicator does not prevent enrollment
  • Click here to review information about common holds

No Access to Enrollment

You are not activated to enroll for this term. Admission, Readmission (re-entry) is needed, or you filed for graduation a semester too early.

  • Students who applied for graduation for the wrong semester (i.e. they still need to take additional courses to meet degree requirements) must contact Degree Audit at degreeaudit@brooklyn.cuny.edu to withdraw their application for graduation and be term activated.
  • To take additional undergraduate classes after graduation, students have the option to return as a non-degree student or second degree student

No Valid Appointment

All continuing undergraduate and graduate students, non-degree students, and visiting students register by logging into CUNYfirst and using Schedule Builder at/after an assigned appointment time.

Your registration appointment date(s) and time(s) are displayed under the term you are registering for.

Schedule Builder does not allow registration prior to your assigned appointment. However, you can plan your schedule in Schedule Builder by viewing classes prior to your appointment.

Courses in Schedule Builder are not automatically added to your schedule; you must complete the registration process to be enrolled.

Maximum Session Unit Load

For students that are in good academic standing, the maximum number of units (credits) allowed in Spring or Fall semesters is 18; 7 in the Winter intersession; and 9 per each Summer session (combined total limit of 18 credits, inclusive of all credits spanning the 10 weeks of summer).

If adding a course exceeds the limit, select a course with fewer credits, or swap out a course in the current schedule.

If it is necessary to enroll above the stated limits for any semester, a petition to the Committee on Course and Standing is required. Consider your proposed course load prior to submitting a petition request.
