Do I need to apply for an F grade replacement?

If you repeat a course in which you previously earned an F, and starting Summer 2024, a D-, D, or D+ (Brooklyn College only), your original grade may be excluded from your GPA through the Grade Replacement Policy, as long as all requirements are met.

No action is required on your end. The process happens automatically in CUNYfirst, usually 2 to 3 weeks after the end of the term, once all grades have been posted for the term.

Important Details:

  • You may replace up to 16 credits total across CUNY for F and eligible D grades.
  • The course must be repeated at the same college where the original grade was earned. Permit courses are not eligible for grade replacement at Brooklyn College.
  • D-grade replacement (D-, D, D+) is a Brooklyn College policy and applies only to D grades earned in Summer 2024 or later.
  • Only the higher of the two grades will count in your GPA. Both grades will still appear on your transcript.

Note: Other CUNY colleges may not allow D-grade replacement. If you are taking courses outside Brooklyn College, you should check that college’s specific policy.

If you have any questions or need clarification, please contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
