Prepare for the Job & Internship Fair

Preparation can be the difference between landing an interview or being overlooked. Here’s how to get ready:

• Dress professionally
• Update and print your resume
• Research participating employers
  • How to find Employers list: When going to Handshake, Go to the Job & Internship Fair tab and click on “View List” on the Employers section.
• Prepare what you will say to employers & what to ask

Do’s and Dont’s

Top Tips for Fair Success:

• Dress for Success: Have you secured your professional attire yet? Here’s some fashion do’s and don’ts.
  • If you are in need of professional attire, check out the Bottomless Closet & Dress for Success programs.
• Update your resume: by using our resume guide before coming in to see a career coach.
• Have your resume reviewed: Attend our Walk in Wednesdays when classes are in session!
• Craft your elevator pitch: Your name, your major, when you will graduate, and your career interest. Check out a video example.
• Get extra preparation: Attend a job fair prep workshop (click to view workshop times and register).
• Conduct research: on the employers who are planning to attend. Use the list to prioritize your top employers.
• Prepare a small bag: Bring at least 15 copies of your resume, a pen and notebook for taking notes, and the list of employers.

Day of the Fair

• Make the Most of It: Talk to a variety of employers – even those outside your field.
• Introduce Yourself: Smile, make eye contact, speak clearly and with confidence.
• Hand Over Your Resume: Give it directly to recruiters and engage in conversation.
• Stand Out: Ask insightful, relevant questions based on your research.
• Wrap Up Strong: Thank the recruiter and ask for a business card or contact info.

After the Fair (Take Action)

• Apply: Follow up with applications as instructed by recruiters.
• Connect on LinkedIn: Send personalized connection requests thanking them for their time & let them know you applied!
• Send a Thank-You Email: If you don’t use LinkedIn or prefer email, follow up within 1–2 days, letting them know you applied. Review these tips and a sample.

At Brooklyn College, the Job and Internship Fair takes place once each semester (Fall and Spring), and is held in the Student Center at 2705 Campus Road (across from Whitehead Hall).

What is a Job Fair/What Can You Expect?

Job fairs are a common recruiting method used by many employers. They can be general or industry-specific, welcoming various types of applicants and positions. Typically, employers send one or two representatives to staff a table. Most representatives are hiring managers. Watch this 2-minute video can help you get a sense of what to expect. 

Representatives attending will mainly be hiring managers. At the fair they may:

• Share information and materials about their company and job openings.
• Collect resumes (some direct applicants to upload resumes online instead).
• Answer questions.
• Provide important follow-up contact details.
• Meet briefly with candidates to quickly assess and decide whom to follow up with.
• Recruit for current or future openings. 
• Handle large crowds and long lines of applicants.
