Example Situation: You are a Brooklyn College Psychology Major who would like to enroll in a psychology course outside of Brooklyn College that would receive credit for an equivalent Brooklyn College course toward your degree.
Before pursuing an e-permit, it is very important that you review the eligibility criteria, instructions, and frequently asked questions here– https://www.brooklyn.edu/registrar/epermits/.
It is also important to reference the residency requirements for the relevant declaration and the overall degree requirements outlined in the Bulletin. Courses completed on ePermit do not apply towards residency requirements.
How to Apply for an ePermit
Click on this link for screenshots/instructions for filing for an ePermit in CUNYfirst —How to Apply for an ePermit (PDF).
If there is difficulty filing the permit, reach out to the epermit Office for assistance– Epermit@brooklyn.cuny.edu .
Add an ePermit with Equivalent Courses
When a student adds an ePermit with Equivalent Courses, they will be able to see the equivalent CUNY course options that would transfer to Brooklyn College. The Brooklyn College course number is the course number you will be looking up.
For example, searching for PSYC 3450W using the “fetch equivalent CUNY courses” will pull up CUNY equivalents to PSYC 3450W.
Students can also reference equivalent courses using Transfer Explorer.
Permit Type
You can select “Major Elective” as the permit type, even when selecting a permit for a course that fulfills a major requirement rather than an elective. There is no option for “Major Required.”
Approval Process For Undergraduate Psychology ePermits
Students do not need approval from the Psychology Department.
Once the ePermit is filed, it will go to the Brooklyn College ePermit Office for approval.
The next level of approval comes from the host college. Access to add the class in Schedule Builder comes with this level of approval.
Check the email you received for further instructions regarding any necessary steps to adding the class (such as requesting prerequisite permission- see below).
Prerequisite Permission from Host College
CUNYfirst does not automatically recognize prerequisites that were completed outside of that college.
Reaching out to the EPermit and/or Psychology Department at the host college with your name, EMPL ID, to let them know you were approved for an ePermit to take (name the course) and you have completed the relevant prerequisite (name the equivalent prerequisite) and where you have taken it, may be necessary to enroll.
ePermit Placeholders and Course Registration
When an ePermit is approved by Brooklyn College, you will see a “PERM” placeholder in CUNYfirst and DegreeWorks that indicates the number of credits for the course. This does not guarantee you a spot in the class. You must self-enroll in an open section of the class via Schedule Builder.
NOTE: Only the ePermit placeholder displays in DegreeWorks (without the specific course/course equivalency) until the course is completed and the grade is processed by Brooklyn College.
How to check your ePermit Status of Cancel an ePermit
Please refer to this pdf for instructions:

NON-CUNY Permits
If you want to take a course at an institution college outside of CUNY, you must file for a non-CUNY permit application (PDF). The requirements for CUNY permits apply to non-CUNY applicants as well.
Submit the application to the applicable Brooklyn College academic department for approval. For Psychology courses, email –Michael Brigando Jr.
Please have the department designee submit this request to
epermit@brooklyn.cuny.edu using their assigned BC email. *This form will not be accepted from students.
You must still apply to the non-CUNY campus and finalize your registration at the college outside of CUNY. Once the semester is done, you will need to request an official transcript be sent to Brooklyn College via e-mail to epermit@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
