• First name, nickname, or initial
• Middle name or initial
• Name that reflects your gender identity
• Proper capitalization, accents, and suffixes (Jr., III, etc.)
• No titles (Dr., Mrs., etc.)
• No inappropriate language

Is this the same as my Preferred Name?
No. Your Preferred Name does not automatically go on your diploma. You must select a Diploma Name separately.

Do I have to choose one?
No. If you don’t, your legal name will be used.

Does this change my legal name or transcript?
No. Your legal name stays the same, and your transcript will always show your legal name.

How do I update it?
Log into CUNYfirst → Profile → Add/Select Name → Mark as Diploma Name
(You can also update it in your Graduation Application.)

How often can I change it?
As many times as you want—until your graduation application is approved.

Where will it appear?
Only on your diploma (and possibly in the commencement booklet if submitted by the deadline).

Important to know:

• Degree verification always uses your legal name.
• Apostilles require your legal name.
• If you plan to work/study outside the U.S. or need professional licensure, consider using your legal
  name.
• Only students graduating Spring 2025 or later can choose a Diploma Name.
