Please check the prerequisite for the course carefully. If you do not have the prerequisite, select a different class.
I completed the prerequisite. Why did I receive this error?
CUNYfirst does not automatically recognize prerequisites unless the prerequisite course(s) are on the Brooklyn College transcript, with the current course number, in a previous semester.
- Outside equivalent prerequisite courses for non-degree/e-permit/visiting students that are reflected on a non-Brooklyn College transcript and courses completed under the old numbering system require prerequisite permission.
- Incoming transfer students may request prerequisite permission for courses while their official transfer credits/course evaluations are pending in their first semester with the understanding the prerequisite permission does not guarantee a course’s equivalency.
- CUNYfirst automatically recognizes completed and pending prerequisites in the semester prior to the enrollment semester, but has difficulty recognizing completed/ pending prerequisites in:
- Winter for Spring enrollment
- Summer 1 for Summer 2 enrollment.
In these cases, prerequisite permission must be requested.
IMPORTANT: It is a student’s responsibility to drop/swap a course if the prerequisite was not ultimately successfully completed prior to the beginning of the relevant semester.
How to request prerequisite permission:
Email Michael Brigando Jr with:
- Your full name
- EMPL ID
- The course you wish to add
- The reason for needing prerequisite permission
- Visiting/ePermit/Non-degree students should indicate where the relevant prerequisite was completed
- If the prerequisite was completed outside of CUNY, please attach evidence of successful completion of an equivalent course such as an unofficial transcript
- If there are multiple semesters open for enrollment, indicate the relevant semester
Can I take the class without the prerequisite or at the same time as the prerequisite?
- In most cases, prerequisites are required and must be successfully completed prior to taking the course because they work as foundational knowledge needed for the course.
